Why cake is good for poultry
- Protein 32–38% — partly replaces soybean meal and fishmeal.
- Fat 7–10% — extra energy, so less oil needs to be added to the feed.
- Methionine — sunflower has more of it than soy, which helps feathering and egg production.
How much to include in compound feed
| Poultry | Share of compound feed |
|---|---|
| Broilers, starter | up to 5% |
| Broilers, grower and finisher | up to 10% |
| Laying hens | up to 15% |
| Replacement pullets | up to 10% |
These are common guideline figures. A feed technologist calculates the formulation, taking into account the fibre, lysine and energy of the whole feed.
What to keep in mind
- Fibre. The more hulls, the lower the acceptable share. Check fibre in the lot analysis — ours is up to 22%.
- Lysine. Balance it with synthetic lysine.
- Enzymes. Enzymes targeting non-starch polysaccharides improve digestibility and let you include more cake.
- Freshness. The fat in cake oxidises during long storage in warm conditions — use a lot within a few months.
