Why cake is good for cows
- Protein 32–38%. Covers protein needs when legumes and concentrates are in short supply.
- Fat 7–10%. Adds energy — important for high-yielding cows in early lactation.
- Affordable price. Usually cheaper than soybean meal per unit of protein.
How much to feed
| Animal group | Daily rate per head |
|---|---|
| Dairy cows | 1.5–3 kg |
| Dry cows | up to 1 kg |
| Young stock, 3–6 months | 0.3–0.5 kg |
| Young stock over 6 months | 0.5–1.5 kg |
| Fattening | 1–2 kg |
These are common guideline figures. A livestock nutritionist calculates the exact rate based on the ration, productivity and the rest of the feed.
How to introduce it into the ration
- Introduce it gradually over 7–10 days, starting with a third of the rate.
- Feed it as part of concentrates or a mixed ration, not on its own.
- Watch the total fat in the ration: too much fat lowers fibre digestibility in the rumen.
- Do not feed cake that smells musty or shows mould.
